New U.S. Registration Requirements for Canadians Traveling to the United States

As of April 11, 2025, all Canadians planning to stay in the United States for 30 days or more must register with U.S. authorities. This measure stems from the presidential executive order “Protecting the American People from Invasion”, which applies to all foreign nationals, including Canadians.

 Why this change?

Previously, foreign nationals were not required to register after being admitted into the United States. These new rules aim to regulate extended stays more effectively while enhancing border security.

Snowbirds and Other Canadians Affected

Snowbirds who spend the winter in the U.S. should pay particular attention. Check whether an electronic I-94 was issued upon entry. If not, you’ll need to complete Form G-325R on the USCIS website. Canadians arriving by air typically receive an electronic I-94 automatically and are therefore already registered. However, those entering by land should verify their status, as the I-94 is not automatically issued. The verification process is quick and free—don’t take unnecessary risks.

Verification and Registration Process for Travelers

Starting April 11, if you plan to stay more than 30 days, follow these steps:

  1. Check if you already have an electronic I-94:
  • Visit the official CBP One™ app or directly the official I-94 website
  • Select “Get Most Recent I-94.”
  • Accept the terms of use and enter your details: full name, date of birth, country of citizenship, and passport number.
  • Print the registration confirmation once the process is complete.
  1. If you do not have an I-94:
  • Create an account on the USCIS website.
  • Complete and submit Form G-325R online (direct link if available: USCIS G-325R).
  • Provide biometric data if requested (children under 14 are exempt).
  • Print the registration confirmation once the process is complete.

For your next stay of more than 30 days in the United States:

  • By land: Apply for a temporary I-94 form on the official I-94 – Apply Now within 7 days before crossing the border.
  • By air: The I-94 form is usually issued automatically when you go through customs.

Helpful Tip

Once at your destination, revisit the I-94 website to confirm your I-94 is properly registered (see step 1 above). Print several copies for each family member and keep them with you, at home, and in your vehicle.

According to the new regulation, all foreign nationals must always carry proof of registration. You must also report any change of address within 10 days, as this is now mandatory. Failure to comply may result in fines or imprisonment.

Who must register?

  • Travelers aged 14 or older and who stay for more than 30 days.
  • Parents or guardians of children under 14 who are not individually registered.
  • Anyone entering by land without prior proof of registration.

What are the risks of failing to register?

  • Denial of entry into the U.S.
  • Shortened authorized stay.
  • Severe penalties, including fines, imprisonment, or a travel ban.

Conclusion

These new requirements mark a significant change for all Canadians aged 14 and over planning to stay in the U.S. for more than 30 days. By checking if you’ve been issued an electronic I-94 and registering, if necessary, you’ll avoid unnecessary complications. These measures are designed to better manage long-term stays and strengthen border security. Prepare in advance to travel with peace of mind.

Entry and registration procedures in the U.S. are subject to frequent updates. It is strongly recommended to consult the official USCIS and CBP websites prior to departure for the latest requirements.
